Japan makes census anime, manga and other cultural exports



Researchers at the University of the Polytechnic University of Japan conducted a census of opinion regarding the Japanese "Cool Japan", this term refers to the international interest in Japan in areas such as anime, manga, architecture, film, fashion and other fields of entertainment and Japanese art.

Only 29% said they had heard the term "Japan Cool" and only 4.6% said they were familiar with the meaning of the term. (The use of culture for global influence is also called "soft power" as opposed to the term "hard power" which refers to military force). When asked about what areas they would like to introduce to the world as part of "Cool Japan," 56.9% said "animation", which was the answer number 1, followed by 49.9% who responded Manga.

47.7% said that it sees the franchise and Doraemon Dragon Ball anime representing the "Cool Japan." Followed by the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise in third place with 47.6%


In the case of manga, Dragon Ball was the No. 1 response among all demographic groups except the adolescent females who responded One Piece. All groups began to Osamu Tezuka in the number 1 mangaka. Regarding the video game Dragon Quest franchise was the answer with the highest percentage. For Japanese films, the answer with the highest percentage were the films of Studio Ghibli. In the first place directors belongs to Akira Kurosawa while in second place was Hayao Miyazaki.

62.8% said they believed that the "soft power" will become the vehicle for the recovery of Japan from the current recession. On Wednesday the Japanese government developed a project proposal which aims to double the revenue derived from overseas anime, movies and other fields by 2020. The "Promotion Plan for IP 2010 international attempts to enhance the resources in these areas to 2.6 trillion yen (around $ 28 billion) in a decade. The plan also intends to halve the damage caused by piracy of Japanese business. The University of Tokyo carried out its survey using mobile phones in the April 30 to May 7, 2010.
